Geology: Tar pits continue to give us rich information about ancient animals The Columbus Dispatch A recent bit of research looked at over 35,000 bones of those two animals to compare the injuries they suffered in life. All of the bones were recovered from a single pit, which means they accumulated at the same time, about 11,500 years ago.
